Marking the 50th edition of Document Nederland, the Rijksmuseum’s annual photography commission, Tina Farifteh portrays B., now in an asylum procedure after months in detention at Schiphol and Ter Apel. Through B.’s words and gaze, Farifteh reveals the stark and often hostile architecture of the Dutch asylum system — questioning how a system once build to protect those in need has become one that can cause harm. Alongside her photographs, Farifteh presents two video works featuring B. as narrator, inviting us to listen to rather than look at, shifting the perspective from speaking about asylum seekers to hearing directly from one.
