Whether for a book or publication, an exhibition, or a social-media feed, photographers usually work with series or sets of images. Selecting which images work well together is called ‘editing’ and the resulting set of photographs is known as an ‘edit’.
Some photographers seem to know how to edit a series based largely on intuition, selecting their favourite photographs and looking for the most visually convincing way of sequencing these, for instance by considering factors such as colours or repeating or contrastive elements. Great books and exhibitions by great photographers have been made in this way.
But what if you struggle to decide which of your photographs are your favourites?
But what if you struggle to decide which of your photographs are your favourites? Or if you end up, despite your best efforts, with too many images for a series? This is when drawing on tools and techniques can help you hone your editing process and clarify the aims of your project.
This booklet discusses editing as both a concept and a practical process and outlines techniques for editing photographs into a coherent series that tells a compelling story.
